Indiana quarterback and Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza got emotional during a Wednesday press conference, paying tribute to the people behind his rise to stardom—especially his younger brother, Alberto Mendoza. Fernando didn’t hold back as he shared the impact of Alberto’s quiet sacrifices that helped fuel Indiana’s playoff run.
Leading the Hoosiers to an undefeated season, a Big Ten championship, and back-to-back College Football Playoff wins, Fernando emphasized that his success is a family affair. IU beat writer Michael Niziolek captured the heartfelt moment in a video that circulated widely.
“I’m really proud of what he’s accomplished,” Fernando said of his brother before the Peach Bowl. “I’ve seen how he’s grown from spring ball to now—operating the offense, executing, and becoming a better quarterback overall. He’s shown leadership in the locker room and understands what it means to be a quarterback beyond just playing on the field.”
Alberto Mendoza, who serves as IU’s backup QB, has been carving out his own path in Bloomington. Before joining Indiana, he made a name for himself in Miami at Christopher Columbus High School, taking over for Fernando and helping secure two state championships. Originally committed to James Madison, Alberto followed coach Curt Cignetti to IU in December 2023.
The bond between the brothers has only strengthened since Fernando joined the Hoosiers after three seasons at California. “Being here with my brother, living with him, playing alongside him—it’s emotional,” Fernando said.
While Alberto mostly plays in mop-up situations, he’s shown flashes of his own talent. This season, he’s completed 18 of 24 passes for 286 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception, plus added 184 rushing yards and a score. His mobility and confidence are evident, even as he continues to develop.
On the other side, Indiana faces a real test in the Peach Bowl against Oregon’s Dante Moore. Both QBs are considered top NFL prospects, and every throw will be under intense scrutiny. Despite the pressure, Fernando and Moore maintain mutual respect, praising each other’s growth and work ethic.
“It’s been amazing to watch both of us improve over this journey,” Fernando said.
