Why Did Paul Pierce Face an $8,508 Monthly Child Support Order?

Paul Pierce’s latest legal battle has reached a temporary financial ruling, with the former Boston Celtics star ordered to pay $8,508 per month in child support for his son, King Rafael Santiago Pierce.

A California judge also ordered Pierce to cover $100,000 in his former partner Princess Santiago’s legal fees and another $10,000 for a forensic accountant. The child-support figure is temporary and could change as the case continues.

What started with a paternity dispute during Santiago’s pregnancy has now expanded into a broader fight involving custody, finances and Pierce’s role in his youngest child’s life.

Judge Sets Temporary Child Support at $8,508

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Pierce must currently pay $8,508 each month for King Rafael Santiago Pierce.

The ruling falls well below the nearly $30,000 per month Santiago had reportedly requested. She argued that Pierce’s substantial NBA career earnings showed he had the financial ability to provide that level of support.

Pierce, meanwhile, reportedly argued for a figure closer to $4,145 per month, saying his former NBA income should not be used as a direct measure of his current earnings.

The court has not closed the door on changing the amount. In other words, this financial scoreboard is still very much in the first quarter.

Pierce’s Current Income Became a Key Issue

Pierce’s NBA career generated an estimated $195 million to $203 million in salary, but his current financial situation is different from his playing days.

Court disclosures cited in the reports showed Pierce averaged approximately $128,000 per month in 2025 and around $165,000 per month during the first six months of 2026. His reported income included commissions, media work and other business ventures.

He also reportedly received $1.5 million from Fox in 2025.

However, Pierce argued that his income is heading downward. Although his employment with FS1 ended in 2021, payments associated with the network were reportedly scheduled to end in September 2026, which he said would significantly affect his future earnings.

Pierce also said he already pays roughly $44,000 each month in other family-related obligations. That reportedly includes $24,000 for four children and $20,000 in spousal support.

He had also been voluntarily sending Santiago $5,000 per month.

Paternity and Custody Dispute Began During Pregnancy

The dispute began in January, when Santiago was pregnant with King and requested a DNA test.

After King was born on February 6, Santiago sought sole legal and physical custody, along with nearly $30,000 in monthly support, $100,000 in legal expenses and help covering pregnancy, birth and post-birth costs.

Pierce formally acknowledged in April that he was King’s biological father. At the same time, he asked the court for joint legal and physical custody.

That distinction is important. The case is not simply about determining whether Pierce is King’s father. It also involves how custody will work, how much financial support should be provided and what role Pierce will have in his son’s life.

Father’s Day Post Added More Fuel

The dispute became more public in June.

Pierce posted photos of four of his children on Father’s Day, but King was not included. Santiago responded on social media and accused the former Celtics star of being absent from their son’s life.

She alleged that King, then nearly five months old, had only seen Pierce twice.

Those statements are Santiago’s allegations, not findings by the court. Pierce had already filed for joint custody, and the family-court case remains ongoing.

The situation also drew attention because of Pierce’s own comments about fatherhood. In a 2008 interview, Pierce spoke about growing up without his father and said he wanted to be the father his own dad had not been.

Alleged Text Messages Reveal Tension

The case took another turn in August when court filings reportedly included alleged text exchanges between Santiago and Pierce.

According to reports on the filings, Santiago claimed she contacted Pierce on February 6 to tell him that his son had been born and invited him to see the baby the following day.

She alleged that Pierce did not respond.

Another message reportedly followed nine days later, with Santiago accusing him of repeating the pattern of his own childhood and saying she would not allow King to be ignored.

In an alleged April 13 exchange, Pierce reportedly said he had officially learned that King was his son and wanted to know if he could see him.

Santiago responded that she had not prevented him from seeing King and said she appreciated him beginning to step forward.

In another alleged message dated April 30, Santiago reportedly told Pierce that she would not continue begging him to be involved.

Again, these messages represent allegations presented by Santiago in court filings, not final judicial findings.

What Happens Next for Paul Pierce and His Son?

For now, the judge has established a temporary child-support payment of $8,508 per month, along with $110,000 in legal and accounting-related costs.

But the larger questions remain unresolved.

Santiago continues to seek sole legal and physical custody, while Pierce has requested joint custody. His financial obligations could also change as the court examines his income and the circumstances of both parents.

The case has therefore moved far beyond a simple paternity dispute. It is now a legal battle over money, custody and parental involvement — with a former NBA champion at the center of a family story that is proving much harder to settle than any fourth-quarter comeback.
