Arizona State’s quarterback situation took another twist this week, and Kenny Dillingham may have a new name to watch closely. As Sam Leavitt’s future with the Sun Devils becomes less certain, a potential replacement has surfaced in the transfer portal—Appalachian State quarterback AJ Swann.
Reports say AJ Swann is preparing to enter the portal after starting 17 games this season for App State. The former Vanderbilt and LSU quarterback threw for 1,083 yards and eight touchdowns, showing flashes of strong decision-making and quick development. For an ASU program that may soon need a new leader under center, Swann checks a lot of boxes.
AJ Swann’s background makes him an intriguing fit for Dillingham’s offense. Out of high school, he was labeled a pro-style quarterback, the type of player comfortable in NFL-influenced systems. At Cherokee High School in Georgia, he put up nearly 7,000 passing yards and 65 touchdowns, earning regional honors as a junior. His quick release, accuracy on the move, and poise in tight windows all fit the up-tempo, aggressive style Dillingham prefers.
He also spent time learning behind LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, gaining experience inside one of the country’s fastest, most explosive offensive schemes. That kind of exposure could help him transition quickly into Dillingham’s system if Arizona State pursues him.
Of course, AJ Swann isn’t perfect. He threw six interceptions this season and has shown struggles when the pocket collapses against top defenses. Still, his mobility, arm talent, and adaptability could make him a strong option if Leavitt does decide to move on.
Right now, there’s still no clear answer on Leavitt’s status. His absence from the team banquet raised eyebrows, and Dillingham’s post-event comments didn’t exactly sound confident.
“It would be cowardly not to recognize this, captain. We wish him well, whatever comes next,” Dillingham said when asked about the situation.
But Arizona State’s concerns don’t end at quarterback. The portal continues to pull pieces away from the roster. Team captain and starting left tackle Josh Atkins has officially entered the portal after starting 39 games and becoming one of the most trusted blockers on the roster. His departure is a major loss for an offense already dealing with instability.
Atkins joins linebacker Tate Romney and offensive lineman Joey Su’a, who also entered the portal earlier. After bringing back 17 starters from last year’s championship team, the Sun Devils hoped for another strong run. Instead, an 8–4 season has triggered frustration and player movement that Dillingham now has to manage.
With uncertainty around Leavitt and a growing list of departures, finding the right transfer quarterback has suddenly become a top priority. If AJ Swann becomes available as expected, Arizona State may have a new solution waiting in the wings.
