Florida fans spent last week hoping the school would hire Lane Kiffin. Instead, the Gators chose Jon Sumrall from Tulane. Right away, many fans wondered if he could handle the SEC and the pressure that comes with coaching at Florida. Since he comes from a smaller program, some people were not sure he was the right guy.
But college football analyst Josh Pate says fans should relax.
On his November 30 podcast, Pate shared that he talked directly with Jon Sumrall. He said the new head coach understands everything that’s going on. “He knows people wanted Lane Kiffin. He knows where he coached before and what critics say about him.”
Jon Sumrall knows he wasn’t the first choice, but he isn’t bothered by it. He isn’t nervous, and he isn’t backing down. He believes in his own ability, and he refuses to let outside opinions distract him. His resume also proves he can win. In only four seasons as a head coach, Sumrall has a strong 42–11 record. He has coached in a conference championship game every year and won two titles at Troy.
Pate believes Florida fans will support him once they see what he builds. With the money, players, and booster support at Florida, Pate thinks the Gators can aim for eight or nine wins in his first year.
Still, not everyone is convinced.
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum criticized the hire on the Matt Barrie Show. He said beating Auburn for Jon Sumrall doesn’t prove Florida made the right move. He fit Auburn very well. I’m not sure anybody fits Florida.”
Finebaum thinks Florida is a tough place for almost any coach. The fan base is demanding. The school wants results fast. And the pressure to win big comes quickly, usually by the second year.
Now the question is simple: Can Jon Sumrall prove the doubters wrong?
The SEC is difficult, and the Gators expect success. But Sumrall chose this job because he believes he can handle it. He isn’t scared of the challenge—he’s ready for it.
Florida fans will soon find out if he’s the right man to bring the program back to national relevance.
