The Kansas City Chiefs have reached the part of the season where every game feels like a playoff game. At 6–6, they’re fighting not only to make the postseason but also to protect Patrick Mahomes’ incredible streak. Since Mahomes became the starter, the Chiefs have made seven straight AFC Championship Games. Now, with five games left, they may need to win all of them to keep that streak alive.

Their latest loss came on Thanksgiving Day in a tough 31–28 game against the Dallas Cowboys. It was a special return for Mahomes, who grew up just a couple of hours away from AT&T Stadium in Tyler, Texas. He played one of his best games of the season, completing 23 of 34 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 30 yards on three carries.

But the Chiefs’ defense could not match his performance.

Dak Prescott had a big day, throwing for 320 yards and two touchdowns while completing 27 of 39 passes. Kansas City’s pass rush couldn’t sack him once. CeeDee Lamb finished the game with seven catches for 112 yards and one touchdown. George Pickens added six catches for 88 yards. Dallas also won the third-down battle, converting 9 out of 16 tries. They outgained the Chiefs 457 to 362 and controlled the game when it mattered most.

This loss put the Chiefs in a tough position. A team that once looked like a title favorite is now close to having a losing season. And that’s why head coach Andy Reid finally stepped up and made things clear after the game.

Andy Reid said the team’s coaches and players must take responsibility for the mistakes. He pointed out that the Chiefs missed too many chances and can’t beat good teams when they keep hurting themselves.

The biggest issue was penalties. Kansas City got flagged 10 times for 119 yards. Those mistakes turned easy downs into long, difficult situations. On defense, penalties allowed Dallas to keep drives alive.

Andy Reid said the team has “no excuses” and must clean things up right away. Travis Kelce has been saying the same thing all year — the Chiefs are hurting themselves more than the opponents are.

Now the Chiefs return home to face the Houston Texans. With five games left and zero room for mistakes, the question is simple: will they fix their issues, or will the same problems show up again? We’ll find out soon enough.
