Colorado State has formally dismissed head coach Jay Norvell and concluded his four-year tenure in Fort Collins by a dismal 2-5 start to the 2025 season. CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz claims the decision came soon after the loss the team suffered to Hawaii on Saturday.
Rams have since lost four out of five games and are struggling to get the offensive base going that was supposed to be a year of a bounce back. Jay Norvell thinks of Colorado State with a total of 18-26 record under his leadership, with a 13-13 record in the Mountain West competition.
It is true that the Rams made gains last season as they notched eight victories, and this provided the fans with optimism that Jay Norvell was in charge of the program in the right direction. This fall soon went wrong though. The loss of 17 points to Washington State in which Colorado State got only three points raised serious concerns over the future of Norvell. The defeats to San Diego State and Hawaii only put pressure even though it briefly took a breather with a win over Fresno State.
Last month, what with the question of his job safety, Jay Norvell responded with some confidence that he was not concerned with it, and proceeded. He further emphasized on responsibility to his players by informing them in the lead-up to the Fresno State game that the cavalry is not riding to their rescue. We have to save ourselves.”
Another significant contributor to the problems of the Rams this season was injuries. Six of the team captains were injured in the preseason and could not play the entire season which left the team thin and inconsistent.
Jay Norvell remained hopeful despite the losses, telling him, prior to the loss in Hawaii, that we have not executed in the way we wanted, but we never gave up. I feel that there are still better days ahead of this group.
Norvell is a 2022 hire to Colorado State, who spent five seasons at Nevada and established the program as one of the more competitive in the Mountain West with a record of 33-26.
Colorado State is now closing the book in anticipation of a huge change of next season joining the new Pac-12 league on the basis of having left the Mountain West Conference.
