The United Football league (UFL) is shutting down three of its franchises among which is the San Antonio Brahmas.

Friday the league had it confirmed that the San Antonio Brahmas, the Michigan Panthers, and the Memphis Showboats were no longer to be run. The news initially appeared in Sports Business Journal and then was put on the official X account of UFL.

Stadium size is one of the reasons why the league moved. The new league plan did not accommodate too many fans in Alamodome in San Antonio that is capable of holding over 62,000 fans in case of a football match. UFL leaders indicate that they would like to change to smaller and more intimate locations that enhance the fan experience.

The numbers of attendance do not give the full picture. SBJ claims that the Brahmas and Panthers actually were the two best attended teams in the league last season.

There has been a good and bad period of the San Antonio Brahmas short run. Introduced in 2023 as a team in the rebranded XFL, the team became a member of UFL a year later as the XFL was merged with the USFL. San Antonio had its most successful season in 2024 under coach Wade Phillips, and managed to achieve 7-3 before losing in the first UFL Championship Game to Birmingham.

Things unraveled quickly in 2025. Phillips resigned after an 0-3 start and the interim coach Payton Pardee was only able to win once the rest of the season. The San Antonio Brahmas finished 1-9.

The Alamodome issued a statement Friday, which said it owes three years of spring football to the league, players, and fans. The venue expressed disappointment with the move to end the franchise of the Brahmas but acknowledged the motivation but it anticipates hosting additional concerts and major sporting events.

The UFL also indicated that it may expand in the future (2028) but it is keeping its options ambiguous in 2021 even with its closures.
