Lane Kiffin’s move from Ole Miss to LSU has turned into one of the biggest coaching stories of the year. Only a few hours after he confirmed he was leaving the 11–1 Rebels, Kiffin started building his new coaching staff in Baton Rouge. That news quickly drew interest from a well-known NFL name — Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.
Right after Lane Kiffin announced his move, Johnson jumped on X with an offer.
“Lane if you need a WR coach I can relocate tomorrow,” he wrote on November 30.
Chad Johnson has no coaching experience, but he does have a strong NFL résumé. He made six Pro Bowls, picked up three All-Pro honors, and is worth around $15 million. His star power could make him a major help in recruiting, especially for young wide receivers who grew up watching him play.
While Chad Johnson was making noise online, LSU was already pulling key assistants from Ole Miss. CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz said that four of Kiffin’s top staff members are heading to LSU: wide receivers coach George McDonald, GM Billy Glasscock, senior associate AD Thaddeus Rivers, and strength coach Nick Savage.
Then Ole Miss took another hit. Offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. — the mind behind Ole Miss’ 498.1-yard offense — is also set to rejoin Kiffin at LSU. Losing him is a big blow for the Rebels.
And more names may follow. According to 247Sports’ Chris Hummer, even more Ole Miss assistants could be packing their bags for Baton Rouge. Co-offensive coordinator Joe Cox, linebackers coach Chris Kiffin, senior director of player personnel Mike Williams, and inside wide receivers coach Sawyer Jordan are all expected to make the move.
This leaves Ole Miss with a tough question: who will steady the program now? The Rebels still have some coaches in place, but losing so many top staff members in such a short time creates real pressure.
With the postseason coming and expectations rising, Ole Miss needs quick answers. The team must rebuild fast if it wants to stay in the playoff picture while major pieces of the staff continue to shift.
