The Kansas City Chiefs are still trying to figure out their run game, and it showed again in their 22–19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. After the game, both head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes talked about why the offense looked so unbalanced.

Reid was honest when reporters asked why the Chiefs kept drifting away from running the ball. He explained that the team called plenty of run-pass options, but Mahomes often chose to throw.

“We’re calling a lot of RPOs,” Andy Reid said. “They gave us chances to throw the ball, so we took them. If you’re getting four yards or more, you stick with it. The runs are being called, but sometimes they turn into passes.”

In simple terms, when Mahomes gets a choice, he usually picks the pass — and that normally works. But Denver has one of the best defenses in the league right now, and a more steady run plan might have helped the Chiefs keep control.

With Isiah Pacheco out because of a knee injury, Kareem Hunt was the only running back to get a carry. He ran 13 times for 59 yards and scored a touchdown. Mahomes, on the other hand, dropped back 45 times and only ran once himself. The Chiefs had 70 total plays, and the lack of balance was easy to see.

The stats show the same thing. Kansas City is great in the air — top four in passing yards — but only average on the ground, ranking 16th in rushing. It’s not terrible, but it’s not the kind of threat that scares defenses.

Mahomes also talked about one play that changed everything: his red-zone interception. He said he should’ve played it safe and taken the field goal instead of forcing a tight throw.

He tried to hit Elijah Mitchell, but Broncos corner Ja’Quan McMillian jumped the route and picked it off. That mistake took points off the board and gave Denver the momentum.

A field goal there could have tied the game and changed the finish. Instead, the Chiefs now find themselves in a tight AFC West race. The Broncos are improving, the Chargers are staying alive, and Kansas City doesn’t have much room for errors anymore.

The Chiefs don’t need to overhaul their whole offense. They just need better balance and fewer mistakes — and they need it fast as the season gets closer to the playoffs.
