On Saturday, Arizona State quarterback Jeff Sims gave his school a record-breaking performance as he rushed 228 yards, a record among the quarterbacks of the Sun Devils, to guide his team to a 24-19 victory over Iowa State.
All afternoon Jeff Sims could not be stopped, and he had a total of 405 yards against him, and had been credited with three touchdowns. The climax that came his way was in the third quarter when he unleashed an 88-yard run into the end zone to score a 24-16 Arizona State (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) lead. The same run also recorded the old school record of the longest quarterback running in a single game which was set by Mark Malone in 1978 when he rushed a total of 178 yards against USC.
“It’s a blessing, man. That is all I am able to say, after the game, Sims said. I was willing to do anything just to win with this team and all people surrounding me contributed a lot.
Jeff Sims handled the ball 29 times and made 13 out of 24 passes that earned him 174 yards. He loved to attack Chamon Metayer with 6 receptions with 68 yards and a touchdown. Raleek Brown, a running back, also maintained the balance of the offense with 64 yards on 16 carries.
The coach of the team, Kenny Dillingham, commended the effort made by the team, stating that the team is not in the business of the second place. The number of chances to win football games is limited and we will give it our all on a weekly basis.
The game came down to the wire. Iowa State (5-4, 2-4) had one last opportunity to make a comeback but their drive fell one yard short of a first down in the ASU 20 with only 16 seconds to go. Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht failed to get into a rhythm and finished 18-36 with 186 yards – his lowest since Week 2 against Iowa.
Matt Campbell, the Iowa State head coach, said we have been in the rut. We have 70 percent great football but we collapse at crucial times. That’s on me. We’ll get it fixed.”
In the case of Arizona State, it was the first win of Jeff Sims since he was a starter in 2022 at Georgia Tech. Another area that the Sun Devils improved on was penalty, reducing them to five after being flagged 12 times during a loss to Houston last week.
Arizona State will have a bye and then West Virginia comes to the state on Nov. 15. The Iowa State will seek to recover its footing in a road trip with TCU on Nov. 8.
