LaNorris Sellers’ 2025 season with South Carolina was a constant challenge. The Gamecocks’ offensive line struggled to protect him, forcing the dynamic quarterback to evade pressure more often than not. Now, with Sellers returning for another year, the team could face further setbacks along the line.

Reports indicate that offensive tackle Mac Walters plans to enter the transfer portal. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound redshirt junior from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, appeared in three games this season and earned a 76.3 PFF grade. Walters saw limited action, including just nine offensive snaps against Oklahoma, though he earned an Offensive Scout Team Award back in 2023. His departure would leave head coach Shane Beamer with more holes to fill on an already thin line.

Injuries and inconsistency plagued South Carolina’s offensive front all season. Left tackle Josiah Thompson was the only lineman to start every game, while key contributors like Cason Henry and Shed Sarratt missed significant time. As a result, LaNorris Sellers took repeated hits, with the Gamecocks giving up 28 sacks in the first eight games and 43 total on the season. The struggling line also hindered the running game, leaving little room to establish a reliable ground attack.

Walters isn’t the only player planning to leave. Tight end Michael Smith entered the portal midseason to preserve his redshirt. Offensive lineman Nick Sharpe, defensive lineman Zavion Hardy, linebacker Jaron Willis, and walk-ons Peyton Argent (kicker/punter) and Emazon Littlejohn (receiver) have all indicated they plan to transfer.

Despite the team’s 4–8 record and offense ranking 104th nationally in scoring, Sellers is betting on a second breakout season. The dual-threat quarterback has thrown for 5,057 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions over three years, adding 995 rushing yards and 13 scores. Once considered a top prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft—ranked No. 3 on Mel Kiper’s early board—he is choosing to return to college, placing faith in South Carolina’s revamped offensive staff.

Shane Beamer has made significant changes, hiring Kendal Briles as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Beamer emphasized the importance of keeping Sellers, calling transfer rumors “absolute horse garbage.” LaNorris Sellers himself confirmed his intentions, stating, “I plan on being here because I’m here right now.” His return is a key offseason win for a program looking to rebuild from a difficult year.
