Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar is heading into Week 12 with a big promise that has Volunteers fans excited. Aguilar will captain the team against New Mexico State, and he used the moment to thank head coach Josh Heupel for trusting him. He also made it clear that he plans to stay at Tennessee for the rest of his college career — a move that reminded many fans of Peyton Manning’s loyalty to the program.
The excitement started when Tennessee’s official X account posted a video of Joey Aguilar talking with radio voice Mike Keith. When Keith asked him what he enjoys most about Tennessee, Aguilar talked about the strong fan support, the famous Vol Walk, and the love he gets from the community. Then he said something that really stood out: he wants to be a Volunteer for his entire career. Keith even compared the commitment to the college days of Peyton Manning and Heath Shuler.
Joey Aguilar also talked about how much he enjoys connecting with young fans. He said kids treat him like a huge celebrity and that simple things like giving them a high-five can make their whole day. Fans loved hearing that, and many showed support online. His mom, Lydia Aguilar, even reposted the video to show how proud she is of him.
Earlier in the season, Joey Aguilar played well enough to get into the Heisman Trophy conversation. His stats are strong: a 65.7% completion rate, 2,737 passing yards, and 21 touchdown passes. He also adds value as a runner, with 85 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. But his eight interceptions — including two costly ones in a loss to Oklahoma — have hurt his chances.
Aguilar still has three games left to improve his Heisman standing. But the competition is tough. Julian Sayin is leading the race, with Fernando Mendoza, Ty Simpson, and Jeremiah Smith also in the mix. To get back into serious contention, Aguilar will need big performances against New Mexico State, Florida, and Vanderbilt.
Even with great games, Tennessee likely won’t make the playoffs without a miracle. Still, Aguilar’s loyalty, leadership, and connection with fans show why many believe he could become one of the next great Tennessee quarterbacks. His promise may be the first step toward building a long, memorable career in Knoxville.
