Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain is expected to be out at least four weeks of the season after having a thumb surgery. On Sept. 25, McCain tore the UCL and in his right thumb in an offseason workout and underwent the procedure on Tuesday. He will be re-assessed in a month or so.

According to the schedule, Jared McCain would be out of the first four or five regular season games. That features the opener of Philadelphia on Oct. 22 with the Boston Celtics. McCain also will miss the Sixers beginning preseason activity Thursday against the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi.

Duke second-year guard was the 16th overall 2024 NBA Draft pick. Although he was only able to play 23 games in his first year with the team because of a knee injury, he was good enough to be nominated as NBA Rookie of the Year. Jared McCain was shooting 46 percent (38.3 percent) with 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds with an average of 15.3 points per game before sustaining an injury on Dec. 13, 2024, against the Indiana game.

Without Jared McCain, the Sixers may resort to rookie VJ Edgecombe, the third-overall pick in the 2025 draft of Baylor, or fifth-year guard Quentin Grimes, still a restricted free agent.

The skill in shooting, moving without ball and bringing a resemblance of energy at both ends make Jared McCain an important puzzle to Philadelphia. The staff will be hoping that he is able to come back soon so as to give them the impetus they require after a strenuous 24-58 season the previous year.
