England all-rounder Chris Woakes has ended his international career with his retirement being announced on Monday. The move follows the 36-year-old being overlooked in England squad in the upcoming Ashes series in Australia.

A month after the Test against India at The Oval when he dislocated his shoulder, Woakes admitted the moment was right. It is time to retire, and I have made up my mind that the time has come, and I would retire because of international cricket, he posted in his social media.

The Warwickshire star had a glorious career having appeared in England in 62 Tests, 122 ODIs and 33 T20 internationals. He had been involved in England winning on both formats of the World Cups: in the 50-over competition in 2019 and T20 in 2022.

Tests Chris Woakes took 192 wickets at 29.61 and also contributed with the bat, scoring one century and seven fifties. His career in international cricket started in 2011 in limited-overs cricket after establishing himself as a dependable all-rounder in all the formats.

Chris Woakes looked back at his career with some pride: “I always wanted to play in England, ever since I was a boy clouding in the back-garden. Playing on behalf of England, appearing on the field with the Three Lions and playing for the last 15 years are all things I will be prouder of later on.

Richard Thompson, the chair of ECB, spoke of the utility of Woakes, as he remembered his effort to play this summer with his arm in a sling: It was how much he loved playing for his country and being the best teammaker he could be.

Team director Rob Key said: Chris Woakes is one of the best individuals to have ever played the game. A career that was made and forged with two of the greatest bowlers of England.

As he quits the international stage, Woakes will still play county cricket and is willing to venture into franchising.
