It was not the most beautiful football match you will ever watch, but the North Carolina Tar Heels eventually made a breakthrough to win the match and on Halloween night at that. UNC also won Syracuse 27-10 behind a monster performance of running back Demon June, and after a four-game losing streak that was becoming a nightmare.
The game fulfilled its spooky theme at the very beginning. The Tar Heel offense again failed to get beat and even though they surpassed Syracuse in total yards through 208-71, they still lost 10-6 in the first half. The touchdown of the Orange was a defensive scoop-and-score by the Orange in the first quarter – the type of play that made the UNC fans dread another long night.
The offensive issues in Syracuse, in any case, rendered matters still uglier. The Orange sought the services of a lacrosse player turned quarter back Joseph Filardi who had a nightmare outing. Filardi only made 4 out of 18 passages, which resulted in 39 yards, and the introduction of a freshman, Luke Carney, could not shift the situation.
Demon June replaced her then. The sophomore runner as the name suggests had his way with the Syracuse defense as he rushed through to score 182 overall yards and two touchdowns. He was fast and strong enough to turn small victories to huge plays as UNC managed to capture the second half of the game. Shipp, a receiver, contributed 50 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Gio Lopez passed the ball 216 yards and two points, which was just sufficient to get the Tar Heels on track to the win.
Although the victory was a relief to Chapel Hill, not everything was forgotten. The Tar Heels yet appeared to be uneven on the offensive, and in a bigger game their mistakes could have cost them at the start. However, to this day, a win is a win and their first ACC win of the season is a feeling of progress.
Having ended the losing streak, North Carolina will look forward to carry on with the momentum as they head back home next week to play Stanford. Should Demon June be able to continue operating like that, perhaps the Heels spooky season is coming around.
