The fallout from Sherrone Moore’s firing has taken over Ann Arbor, turning what started as quiet rumors into one of the wildest weeks Michigan football has seen in years. In less than a day, the Wolverines went from dealing with whispers about Moore’s alleged relationship with staffer Paige Shiver to facing a full-blown crisis involving police, campus leadership, and now assault allegations. As the situation keeps evolving, one of Michigan’s most visible supporters — and biggest financial backers — Dave Portnoy has jumped into the conversation.
Michigan leaders have made it clear they want answers fast. Interim president Domenico Grasso sent a public letter to all students, stressing that the university will not tolerate “this conduct” from anyone connected to the program. He also encouraged students to share any information that could help investigators understand exactly what happened.
Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder who has invested heavily in Michigan athletics, backed Grasso’s message online. He reminded critics that the school is actively working to uncover the truth, posting, “Next time somebody says Michigan isn’t doing enough, just remember that our interim President penned an open letter… asking them to come forward with info.”
Portnoy’s support isn’t new. He has poured millions into Michigan athletics, helped recruit five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, and regularly uses his platforms at Barstool and FOX Sports to champion the Wolverines while taking playful shots at rivals like Ohio State. So it’s no surprise he’s locked in on the Moore situation as it unfolds.
Michigan announced that Moore was fired for cause after what it called credible evidence of an inappropriate relationship with Shiver, who works as the executive assistant to the head coach. But the university is continuing its investigation, calling Moore’s actions a serious breach of trust that damaged people inside the program. Grasso made it clear the firing doesn’t close the book — accountability is still being pursued.
Meanwhile, Sherrone Moore’s legal troubles are becoming just as serious. Hours after he was dismissed, police were called to the Ann Arbor home linked to Shiver following a 911 report of a heated confrontation involving Moore. According to dispatch audio and early reports, Moore arrived at the home extremely distressed about losing his job. Officers were told he was suicidal and possibly armed with a knife.
The caller said Sherrone Moore had “lost control.” One dispatcher reported he allegedly held a knife to his own throat before leaving the home. Police treated it as both an assault investigation and a mental-health emergency, rushing to the scene to secure Shiver’s safety.
Sherrone Moore was later detained nearby and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail as investigators opened assault charges. Prosecutors said any decisions on formal charges or arraignment will come after further review. Shiver’s exact role in the incident has not been clarified publicly, but university statements point to her as the staff member involved in both the relationship allegations and the police response.
With both the school and law enforcement digging deeper, the Moore saga shows no signs of slowing down. For now, Michigan is trying to steady itself while the truth continues to emerge — piece by piece.
