Lane Kiffin’s coaching future is once again the biggest story in college football, and it’s creating real stress inside the Ole Miss program. The Rebels are trying to stay locked in on the playoff race, but the staff is also wondering if their head coach is getting ready to leave for LSU or another major job.
On the College Football Enquirer podcast, insiders Andy Staples, Ross Dellenger, and Steven Godfrey talked about why the situation feels so tense. Much of the pressure comes from the fact that Kiffin runs the offense himself. He calls the plays and controls the game plan. If he leaves before the postseason, Ole Miss would have to adjust right away.
Staples believes offensive coordinator Joe Judge would take over in a CEO-style role because of his past experience as an NFL head coach. That would keep defensive coordinator Pete Golding focused on running the defense. Meanwhile, Charlie Weis Jr. would suddenly be the one calling offensive plays, something he hasn’t had to do this season because Kiffin handles it.
This uncertainty has caused the coaching staff to split. Some assistants are ready to follow Kiffin if he takes another job. Others think Ole Miss has a real chance to make a deep playoff run and want to focus on the team. Staples added that a few coaches are getting tired of how long Lane Kiffin usually takes to make decisions, especially when it comes to transfers or job opportunities.
Godfrey compared the situation to a WWE storyline—lots of drama, rumors, and guessing games. He said most coaching hires are fast and simple, but Lane Kiffin likes to stretch things out. That creates even more tension and gives him more leverage with every school that wants him. Both analysts agreed that Kiffin, not his agent Jimmy Sexton, is the one driving all this drama.
On top of that, LSU is reportedly preparing a huge offer worth around $90 million, and Lane Kiffin’s family was spotted in Baton Rouge last week. Still, leaving Ole Miss after one of the best seasons in school history wouldn’t be an easy move. Fans remember how quickly Kiffin left Tennessee for USC, and many wonder if he could make another big jump.
Lane Kiffin is expected to decide after the Egg Bowl. Until then, Ole Miss coaches are stuck waiting, players are trying to ignore the chaos, and everyone in college football is watching to see whether he stays or heads to LSU for a shot at winning a national title in the next few years.
