Oklahoma State has officially started a new chapter by hiring Eric Morris from North Texas as their next head coach. Many fans didn’t see this coming, but a lot of college football experts think the Cowboys just made one of the best hires of the year.
The program has been struggling badly. Oklahoma State finished 1–10 and went two straight seasons without a single Big 12 win. That led to the firing of longtime coach Mike Gundy. Because the team is in full rebuild mode, former All-American Adam Brenneman said on X that Morris is exactly the type of coach they needed. He described the program as being in the “worst spot in decades,” but said Morris is the right person to fix it.
Eric Morris is known for his smart offensive mind. At North Texas, he turned the team into one of the top offenses in the country. The Mean Green went 10–1, their best season since 1959. They also led the nation in scoring with 46.3 points per game and averaged 503 yards per game. His work helped North Texas earn national rankings for the first time in years.
Eric Morris also has a strong track record with quarterbacks. High school coach Thad Wells praised him for helping develop players like Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Cam Ward, John Mateer, and current breakout star Drew Mestemaker. Many people consider Morris one of the best quarterback developers in college football.
Mestemaker, his latest project, has been a huge surprise this season. The redshirt freshman started as a walk-on and now leads the nation with 3,469 passing yards. He has thrown 26 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Some scouts even say he looks like a future first-round NFL draft pick.
This raises the big question: Will Mestemaker follow Eric Morris to Oklahoma State?
Right now, nothing is final. Mestemaker has said he loves playing for Morris because he trusts his quarterbacks and gives them confidence. Many analysts think a reunion at Oklahoma State could happen. But for now, Morris is staying with North Texas through the end of the season, which might include championship games or even a College Football Playoff run.
Both Eric Morris and Mestemaker say they will talk about their futures once the season is over. Until then, Oklahoma State fans will have to wait — but hiring Morris already feels like a major step in the right direction.
