The Los Angeles Rams are keeping one of their top defensive players for the long term. Linebacker Nate Landman agreed to a new three-year contract extension on Saturday. The team didn’t share the financial details, but several reports say the deal is worth $22.5 million, including $15.6 million guaranteed. It’s a big raise for Landman, who was making just $1.1 million this season on a veteran minimum contract.

For the Rams, the extension is about more than money. Nate Landman has become a respected leader in the locker room. Head coach Sean McVay praised him, saying Landman earned the trust of his teammates fast. He was even voted a team captain during his first year with the Rams, which is something that doesn’t happen often.

McVay said Nate Landman has great awareness on the field and knows how to communicate well. As the player who wears the green dot on defense, Landman is in charge of calling plays and making sure the front and back end of the defense stay in sync. McVay also talked about his emotional intelligence and how he knows the right moments to speak up or stay quiet. According to McVay, Landman has “a great feel” for leading his teammates.

Nate Landman’s performance this season has also been strong. In 10 games, he has 91 tackles, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Since entering the NFL in 2022 as an undrafted free agent from Colorado, Landman has played 46 games with the Atlanta Falcons and the Rams. His career totals include 283 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

He also has a unique background. Nate Landman is the only current NFL player who was born in Zimbabwe. His journey from undrafted rookie to team captain — and now to earning a major extension — shows how hard he has worked to earn his spot.

With this new deal, the Rams are making it clear that they see Landman as an important part of their defense for years to come.
