Week 12 of the college football season is here, and many teams are fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive. Some teams need to win to stay in the race, while others are trying to prove they belong in the final four. Among this week’s matchups, the game between Texas and Georgia is one of the biggest. And ESPN analyst Joey Galloway believes it could end in a surprise.
Joey Galloway, a former Ohio State star, joined Kirk Herbstreit’s podcast and said he thinks Texas will beat Georgia. It was a bold call, since Georgia is still a strong program and is slightly favored to win.
“I’m going to say Texas,” Galloway said on the show. “If they can run the football, they have a real chance. That will make Georgia have to respond in the second half. Texas has the talent to do that.”
Joey Galloway pointed to Texas’ recent win over Vanderbilt as a reason for his confidence. The Longhorns jumped out to a big 34–10 lead in that game before holding on for a 34–31 victory. Ryan Wingo helped spark the offense with a long touchdown play, and the defense created early pressure. After that game, Texas got a bye week to rest and recover, which Galloway thinks could help a lot.
Texas has not been great on offense this season, either in passing or rushing. Both parts of their offense are ranked outside the top 50 nationally. But their defense has been strong. Texas ranks 22nd in total defense, second in rushing defense, and has recorded 34 sacks this season. Their defensive line could be a problem for Georgia, whose rushing offense is ranked 24th and whose passing game sits around 60th nationally.
If Texas beats Georgia, the playoff picture could change fast. The Longhorns could move into the top six, especially with a game against third-ranked Texas A&M still ahead. Former Georgia star David Pollack also believes Texas has a chance to move up if they win their remaining games.
Right now, Georgia is still favored with a 59.8% chance to win, according to ESPN. The Bulldogs will also have the home crowd in Athens and a tough pass rush. But Texas will be rested and motivated.
If the Longhorns start fast, the upset Joey Galloway predicted could actually happen.
