Jayden Fielding has been in the middle of some of Ohio State’s biggest moments this season, and the pressure on him has never felt heavier. As fans relive memories from the 2024 showdown against Michigan, another tough miss in the Big Ten Championship has the senior kicker back in the headlines. But before diving into the late-game drama, here’s a closer look at who Fielding is and how he became Ohio State’s go-to specialist.
Jayden Fielding grew up in League City, Texas, and was actually a standout soccer talent long before he became known for kicking footballs on Saturdays. He played in the Houston Dynamo’s youth academy and showed the kind of precision and athletic ability that would later translate to the gridiron. His high school journey took him from Clear Creek High School to IMG Academy in Florida — one of the top athletic programs in the country — where he sharpened his kicking game.
Despite interest from multiple schools, Fielding took a leap of faith and joined the Buckeyes as a preferred walk-on. It didn’t take long for him to prove he belonged. He worked his way up, earned a full scholarship, and eventually became Ohio State’s top scorer for two straight seasons. Wearing No. 38, Fielding built a reputation for being calm under pressure. He even leaned into a “villain” role at times — a kicker who wasn’t afraid of big moments. Fans celebrated his clutch performances, like sealing the 2024 National Championship win over Notre Dame and drilling a career-best 46-yard field goal earlier this year.
But life as a kicker isn’t always full of highlights. When things go wrong, everyone sees it — and everyone remembers. That reality hit hard late in the Big Ten Championship, when Jayden Fielding missed a 27-yard attempt with 2:48 left on the clock. The kick would have tied the game at 13–13, but it drifted wide left. Indiana held on for a 13–10 upset, and the miss instantly became the moment everyone talked about.
What made it sting even more was the déjà vu. Last season against Michigan, Fielding missed two critical field goals in another 13–10 loss. He was battling a hip issue at the time, but that didn’t make the what-ifs any easier for fans — or for him.
Still, coming into the Indiana matchup, Jayden Fielding had been reliable, hitting 15 of his 17 field goal attempts this season and making a 30-yarder earlier in the championship game. But in a low-scoring battle, one mistake can overshadow everything else.
Jayden Fielding will have to shake off another tough moment, but his story isn’t defined by one kick — or even a couple. He’s earned his way up before, and the Buckeyes will be looking for him to bounce back again.
