Penn State quarterback Drew Allar will not get another year in college football. He was hoping for a medical redshirt after breaking his ankle against Northwestern, but NCAA rules ended that plan. Now, Allar is focusing on moving to the NFL.

Drew Allar got hurt while trying to make a key third-down play and took a hard hit from linebacker Mac Uihlein. Six weeks later, he is recovering well and staying positive. He had hoped to use a medical redshirt to stay another year, but he played too many games this season to qualify.

Even with this setback, Drew Allar’s record at Penn State is impressive. In four years and 45 games, he threw for 7,402 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. This season, he had 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions, completing 64.8% of his passes. He holds Penn State records for completion percentage and is top three in touchdown passes. Last year, he led the team to a 13-3 season and a semifinal spot in the College Football Playoff.

Before this season, Allar was considered a top quarterback for the 2026 NFL Draft. Some even thought he could be the No. 1 pick. Scouts liked his strong arm, mobility, and size. The ankle injury might be a worry for teams, but the pre-draft process will give him a chance to show he’s ready for the NFL.

Meanwhile, Penn State is looking for a new head coach. James Madison coach Bob Chesney is the favorite, followed by Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman. Chesney has a 17-5 record in two seasons at JMU and a 10-1 record this year. Freeman has gone 37-11 in three seasons at Notre Dame and recently led the team to the College Football Playoff.

Penn State fans now have two big questions: who will be the next coach and how Drew Allar’s NFL career will start. Both the team and the quarterback have exciting times ahead.
