Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is adamant that his team would not be distracted by a demanding schedule as they gear up to play a big game in the Bundesliga against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
The German champions are on the verge of a busy period, three matches in seven days but Kompany feels his players are prepared to cope with it. This, Kompany said in his pre-match press conference, was a best match in my book. It is also a little bit rivalrous compared to the last two seasons.
That rivalry runs deep. In 2024, leverkusen became undefeated champions and the year before, became runners-up to Bayern. Today, they have not lost their 37 consecutive away league matches a record in Bundesliga. Meanwhile, Bayern are 24 points leaders in the table with Leverkusen placed fifth with 17 points.
This season the Bavarians are in pursuit of history once again. Their 4-1 triumph over Cologne in the German cup on Wednesday was their 14th consecutive victory in all competitions the all-time record of any club in any of the top five leagues in Europe. The next victory would give the player a record of 15 consecutive games, overtaking the 13 games of the season 1992-93 of AC Milan.
However, Kompany is not contemplating records yet. I have not come to determine who are our chief title competitors. It is just winning tomorrow that counts. We will not underestimate Leverkusen, whom we know well what they can do.
Leverkusen are fresh and in the hands of a new coach Kasper Hjulmand who assumed power following the brief two games of Erik ten Hag at the beginning of the season. They have since followed up by winning four consecutive Bundesliga games, and have gained 16 of the 18 points available to them.
Leverkusen has lost several of their major talents such as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong in the summer but they have done well to recover with new talent. Kompany accepted their strength when he remarked that they lost a lot of talent but also purchased a lot of talent. They are as dangerous in front of goal.
As the next week the team of Bayern is to visit Paris Saint-Germain in the frame of the Champions League, Kompany accentuated that the objective of the team is the same. This was a routine schedule with us, he said. There is no tough stage, there is the next game to win.
