Chivas Guadalajara and Tigres UANL played out a goalless draw on Wednesday in their rescheduled Apertura opener. The match featured World Cup winner Ángel Correa for Tigres and was managed on the other side by his fellow Argentine, Gabriel Milito.
With the draw, Tigres moved to 15 points and now sit fifth in the standings, while Chivas remain in 11th place with eight points.
The first half lacked pace, with both sides struggling to find rhythm. Tigres looked to create chances through Correa and Juan Brunetta, but Chivas’ tight defense kept them at bay.
In the second half, Tigres pushed harder. Correa fired two dangerous long-range shots, but Chivas goalkeeper Raúl Rangel denied both attempts.
Chivas Guadalajara had a golden chance in the 63rd minute when Javier Aquino handled the ball inside the box. Efraín Álvarez stepped up to take the penalty, but Tigres keeper Nahuel Guzmán guessed right and made a brilliant save.
The result marked Tigres’ second straight draw in the tournament.
The Apertura continues this Friday with the start of Matchday 9. Cruz Azul, unbeaten and sitting second, face Juárez FC, while Fernando Gago’s Necaxa host bottom-placed Puebla. León, with Colombian star James Rodríguez, visit Tijuana, managed by Uruguayan legend Sebastián “Loco” Abreu, and Mazatlán take on Atlas.
Saturday brings the most anticipated clash as leaders Monterrey, featuring Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, go head-to-head with América, coached by Brazilian André Jardine. Fans will also see a duel of Argentine managers when Antonio Mohamed’s reigning champions Toluca face Gabriel Milito’s Guadalajara, while Tigres take on Pumas UNAM, led by Costa Rican keeper Keylor Navas. Pachuca also meet Querétaro that day.
The round wraps up on Sunday with Santos Laguna hosting Atlético San Luis.
