The mood around the Dallas Mavericks has taken a big turn. On Monday night, fans at the American Airlines Center chanted “Fire Nico” as P.J. Washington was at the free-throw line. They were upset about general manager Nico Harrison, the man who made the move to trade away Luka Dončić last season. Now, less than a day later, it looks like those chants are becoming real.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont is expected to fire Nico Harrison during a team meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. CT. This move would officially end Harrison’s four-plus years running the team’s basketball operations.
The Mavericks‘ 2025–26 season is off to a rough start. They currently hold a 3-8 record and sit near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The team was built to compete for a championship, but that has not been the case. A major reason fans are frustrated is the trade that sent Luka Dončić out of Dallas and brought in Anthony Davis.
Davis was supposed to help the team stay in “win-now” mode. Instead, it has gone the other way. He has already missed several games this season due to a calf strain and, even when he does play, the Mavericks do not look like a contender. The trade has looked more and more one-sided, and many fans believe it damaged the franchise’s long-term future.
Even team owner Patrick Dumont recently admitted that trading Dončić was a mistake. Dumont spoke with an 18-year-old Mavericks fan named Nicholas Dickason at a recent game. Dickason had previously yelled at and flipped off Dumont during opening night. When he apologized, Dumont acknowledged that the team meant well at the time of the trade, but it did not work out. “You make mistakes sometimes even though you mean well,” Dumont told him.
Now, Dallas has to move forward. With Nico Harrison expected to be let go, the Mavericks will need to regroup, try to stabilize their season, and figure out how to build a stronger future after one of the most criticized trades in their franchise history.
