The manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Vitor Pereira, has encouraged fans to remain with the club following the 3-2 defeat at home to Burnley on Sunday, which left fans angered and frustrated in the Molineux stadium. The defeat meant that Wolves was stuck at the bottom of the Premier League table with only two points in nine games, becoming the only club in the top four divisions in England to have no wins.
What was more emotional is the fact that the mood around Pereira has shifted relatively fast. Just a few months back, supporters were singing his name as he steered Wolves to the safety zone during the last months of the previous season. After another painful loss, now the same supporters expressed their dissatisfaction, shouting You’re getting sacked in the morning.
The situation escalated to the point that when Pereira came out at the end of the game, he seemed to confront a crowd of angry fans, and had to be dragged away by his teammates. The Portuguese coach also added afterwards that he fully knew how the supporters felt but it was only when people pulled together that the club would make progress.
Pereira told the journalists that they knew how the people and supporters felt. But what I need to say is that, when we play together with them, then we could win games and compete. It cannot be without them. Two months back they sang my name since we remained in the Premier League. Now they sing it to sack me.”
Wolves displayed fighting instinct on the field. Burnley stormed to a 2 goal advantage and Jorgen Strand Larsen scored a penalty and a header by Marshall Munetsi equalized the game. Nevertheless, a stoppage-time goal by Burnley shattered the hearts of Wolves and prolonged their pathetic streak.
At the end, Pereira commended his players despite the outcome, in terms of their strength and character.
Supposed I were one of them, I would be proud, he said. They exhibited the mindset and the desire to reverse the situation in the game despite being 2-0 behind in the 30th minute.
Wolves will attempt to reunite soon, and they will have a test of a League Cup against Chelsea in midweek after which they will resume league action against Fulham on Saturday. Pereira understands that the following couple of games may be the decisive ones not only to the season of his team but perhaps to his future at the club.
