On Sunday, Manchester United finally ended their nine years of waiting to do so at Anfield after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool by a late header by Harry Maguire. The triumph is quite a setback to the title aspirations of Liverpool in the Premier League and a well deserved boost to United.

Liverpool, which has lost its four consecutive losses in all competitions since 2014, dropped to the fourth position in the table with 15 points, four behind the leaders, Arsenal. Meanwhile, United, with 13 points, jumped to the ninth place after its two-goal league victories in the first time under the management of Ruben Amorim.

The match began with a shocker with Manchester United striker Bryan Mbeumo scoring within a minute of the proceedings. Amad Diallo advanced, and flicked an ideal ball to Mbeumo, who shot into the box and frustrated the fans of Liverpool. There were claims play ought to have been terminated because Alexis Mac Allister was down following an encounter with team mate Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool continued to take the pressure, and Cody Gakpo struck the post three times before finally levelling the score at 78 minutes, tapping in a cross by Federico Chiesa. But United had the final word. Bruno Fernandes gave an accurate cross in the 84 th minute and Maguire lifted above Ibrahima Konate to head the goal.

Everything, Maguire said to Sky Sports. They have gotten the best of us in the past few years. It is rare to be able to come here finally and win three points. It is in the interest of the fans–they are entitled to this.

Liverpool back Casemiro struck Diallo on the arm with a cross, which made it clear that it was in a natural position, which meant that VAR did not allow penalty claims at an early stage.

Liverpool could not take advantage even when they had 19 shots in comparison to 12 of United. There were several attempts to shake the post by Gakpo and Mohamed Salah had a good opportunity in the end of the second part.

The defeat hurt Virgil van Dijk. He said we gave them a very loose second goal. The second goal was unsatisfying, we struggled to make it back. We should be humble and continue to work and help one another. It’s a long season.”
