Malcolm Brogdon Ends His NBA Career After Nine Seasons, Why he walked away now?

Malcolm Brogdon New York Knicks retirement

It is a career that Malcolm Brogdon is calling. On Wednesday, the veteran guard announced that he is retiring out of basketball after 9 seasons in the NBA.

Malcolm Brogdon announced to ESPN that he is officially starting to leave his basketball career today. I have dedicated my body, soul and mind to the game with pride in the past decades. I have had many rewards with the myriad sacrifices that I have made to get here.

The man aged 32 years admitted that he was happy to leave on his own terms and he owes all the people who gave him the strength to go through the journey. New York Knicks, who signed him only a month ago, also posted on social media to congratulate his career.

An illustrious career is terminated

The first player to join the league was Brogdon, who was picked by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round (No. 36 overall) in 2016. He was able to establish his name soon and even won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2017. He was later named a major reserve of the Boston Celtics, and became the Sixth Man of the Month in 2023, becoming the only player in the history of the league to win both awards, along with Mike Miller.

During his professional life, Brogdon has been associated with the Bucks and the Indiana pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland trailblazer, Washington wizards and the Knicks as the last team he plays. During 463 games (career) he scored 15.3 points, 4.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds and scored almost 39 percent on three-point shots.

Why he walked away now

Brogdon would have been included in the Knicks starting lineup and would have been a backup guard to Jalen Brunson. However, following an unproductive preseason in which he could not score and even acknowledged his competitive instinct was disappearing, he decided to step aside before it would even start.

The realization of some of the desire was experienced in the camp, as reported by Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

Earnings on contracts and careers

Malcolm Brogdon had signed a one-year Exhibit 9 agreement with New York, which was non-guaranteed, would have paid him approximately $3.3 million in 2025, and 2026. During his career, he received some $132.5 million in NBA salary, exclusive of endorsements. In 2019, he struck his biggest sale in a four-year, 85 million contract with the Pacers.

Battling through injuries

Malcolm Brogdon did not have a career without hitches. He has lost major time in several seasons through a number of injuries – ankle, foot and elbow injuries, and a torn quadriceps tendon at the start of his career.

Malcolm Brogdon was one of the most valuable and esteemed guards in the league despite the challenges. He also became a member of the 50-40-90 club in 201819 when he recorded more than 50 percent field, 42.6 percent three and 92.8 percent free-throw line.

Malcolm Brogdon is walking out of basketball as one of the most consistent and intelligent players of his time a genuine professional who made his mark both on and off the field.
