Erling Haaland was at it again on Saturday, scoring twice late on as Manchester City rolled to a dominant 5-1 win over Burnley. The Norwegian striker not only secured the points but also made Premier League history.
City were handed an early boost thanks to Burnley defender Maxime Esteve, who had a nightmare afternoon with two own goals. His first came when he sliced a clearance into his own net after Martin Dubravka pushed out a Jeremy Doku effort.
Despite City’s control, Burnley briefly found hope when Jaidon Anthony’s deflected strike leveled the score. Scott Parker’s side even threatened early in the second half, with Lyle Foster and Quilindschy Hartman both testing Gianluigi Donnarumma.
That was as good as it got for the visitors. Matheus Nunes smashed home a brilliant volley from a Erling Haaland knock-down before Esteve turned in his second own goal under pressure from Oscar Bobb. Haaland then took over, scoring twice in the final minutes to seal another ruthless win for Pep Guardiola’s men.
The brace moved Erling Haaland into the Premier League record books. With 92 goals in just 103 games, he is now the top Scandinavian scorer in league history, surpassing Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who needed 236 games to reach 91 goals.
At only 25, Haaland’s numbers are staggering: 133 goals in 153 matches for City, including 52 in just 51 games at the Etihad Stadium. Only Sergio Agüero has scored more at home for City, but the gap is shrinking fast.
With his consistency and scoring rate, many believe Erling Haaland is on track to challenge the all-time records held by Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo. For now, though, he’s simply redefining what it means to be a Premier League striker.
