Carlos Alcaraz continued his strong run at the ATP Finals on Tuesday. The world number one defeated American Taylor Fritz 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-3 in a tough match in Turin. The win gives Alcaraz two victories from two matches in the round-robin stage and keeps him in a good position to reach the semifinals. He is also getting closer to securing the year-end world number one ranking.
The match was high quality from the start. Fritz, who reached the final last year, played very well and pushed Alcaraz in every set. He served with power and confidence and took the first set in a tiebreak after hitting two strong aces. At that moment, Fritz looked like he had the upper hand.
But Alcaraz stayed patient. Even though he struggled with his serve and rhythm early in the match, he continued to fight for every point. In the second set, he saved break points and kept himself in the match. Late in the set, he broke Fritz’s serve and won it 7-5 to level the score.
In the final set, Fritz began to slow down as the long rallies and high intensity took a toll. Alcaraz raised his level and took control. He broke Fritz to move ahead 4-2 and then served out the match confidently. It took two hours and forty-eight minutes to play.
It was a close game indeed, Alcaraz said afterwards. I was having difficulties during the first set and primarily with my serve. He was playing very well. I’m just happy I found a way to come back.”
Alcaraz could qualify for the semifinals if Alex de Minaur defeats Lorenzo Musetti later in the day. He will play Musetti next, and one more win would guarantee that he finishes the year as world number one again.
Still, Alcaraz says he is trying to stay relaxed.
Alcaraz showed once again that he can handle pressure in the big moments — and that makes him dangerous as the tournament continues.
