Man City celebrated a big moment on Sunday with a strong 3-0 win over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium. The match was Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th game as a manager, and his team gave him the perfect gift with a confident and complete performance.
With this win, Manchester City move up to second place in the Premier League table with 22 points from 11 matches. They are still chasing leaders Arsenal. Liverpool, who entered the match hoping to continue their improving form, drop to eighth place with 18 points.
Man City controlled the game early and created the better chances. Erling Haaland missed a penalty in the opening minutes, but he didn’t stay quiet for long. In the 29th minute, he jumped above Ibrahima Konate and headed in a perfect cross from Matheus Nunes. It was Haaland’s 99th league goal for City, and his celebration showed how much it meant after the earlier miss.
Right before halftime, City doubled their lead. Nico Gonzalez took a long shot after fans urged him to try. The ball took a deflection off Virgil van Dijk, causing goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to move the wrong way. The Etihad crowd exploded as City went into the break ahead 2-0.
Man City sealed the victory in the 63rd minute through Jeremy Doku. Nico O’Reilly found him near the box, and Doku shifted the ball to his other foot before sending a powerful curling shot into the far corner. It was his first Premier League goal since January and it put the game out of reach.
Guardiola praised his players afterward, saying they delivered a top-level performance in an important match. Defender Ruben Dias said the team “lives for games like this” and that everyone stepped up.
Liverpool did have a goal ruled out earlier in the match. Virgil van Dijk thought he had scored, but VAR said Andy Robertson was offside and interfering with the goalkeeper. After the game, Van Dijk said the loss was tough but reminded fans that the season is long and the team will keep fighting.
Man City finished with six shots on target, while Liverpool managed only one. The result sends a strong message that Manchester City remain serious title contenders.
