Texas state football does not have the interest to play the what if game any more. Following three consecutive gutwrenching defeats, the Bobcats realize that their shot at the Sun Belt title is going to slip away- however there is not time to look at the rearview mirror with a giant James Madison on the verge of making its appearance on Tuesday night.
Head coach GJ Kinne knows how frustrating the recent few weeks have been. His team stands at 3-4 overall, and it is yet to win its first game in the conference. All the defeats were narrow by one point, and Texas State had a legitimate chance to win in each match.
But Lincoln Pare who is running back says there is no point living in the past and making time seem like it was. From wondering and wondering, you see your mind will end up in the gutter, Pare said. The intimacy of us all can be observed. But being a football team, you must go into the next week.
The competition with JMU provides an evident difference in styles. Texas State is an offensive powerhouse in the Sun Belt with a 36.1 point per game, and the Dukes are the best in the league with a 15.6 scoring defense. The Bobcats seem to begin well and end poorly whereas the JMU plays well in pressure situations since it has been able to win its past three games when it was losing at the end of the first half.
Kinne is aware that his team would have to play almost perfect football to take away an upset. It is a team like JMU and only a near-perfect game is going to beat these guys, Kinne said.
In order to be ready, the Bobcats have been practicing on second-half performance. Those are two minute scenarios, third down, and late-game scenarios – situations that have been their downfall over the past few weeks.
This will be as much about leadership. According to Pare, he believes in quarterback Brad Jackson, who has been calm and consistent to keep the offense afloat with almost 488 yards per game.
Whatever he goes through, he will always remain the same guy, Pare said.
The record of Texas State may have looked much different given that a couple of plays would have fallen in their favor however, Bobcats know that is irrelevant at this point. Tuesday has been another grit and faith test as JMU is the Sun Belt leader and has the momentum.
Play every Sun Belt game, you go to war, said Pare. “And I love that about it.”
