On Sunday, Rashid Shaheed demonstrated his scorching speed and provided the New Orleans Saints with one of the biggest hits of the season.
During the first half with the New York Giants, the wide receiver beat the defense with an 87 yard long touchdown catch, the longest of his career. What was even more amazing was speed: Shaheed was timed at (21.72 miles per hour) the fastest time of any scoring play in the NFL this season. That surpassed the earlier mark by Los Angeles Rams a receiver Tutu Atwell by a margin of 0.02 mph.
The Saints were able to narrow the gap between them and the Giants thanks to the big play and were positioned to take a 16-14 lead at the half.
Rashid Shaheed Deep Threat Ability
Shaheed has been a field stretcher. His three touchdowns last year were on long throws of 43, 59 and 70 yards. The 87-yarder of Sunday was of a different order, in length and velocity.
From Undrafted to Playmaker
Rashid Shaheed did not make it to the NFL easily. He was not drafted in 2022, became a free agent, and was signed by the Saints. He was not drafted, but was offered one of the richest deals in the group of undrafted rookies that year, a guaranteed base wage of $207,000 and a signing bonus of $15,000.
Prior to the NFL, Shaheed had established his reputation at Weber State where he was the FCS all-time leader in kickoff returns scores (seven). He is also the all time leader in kickoff returns (29.1 yards per return) and was chosen as an All-American four times.
Rising Star in New Orleans
Rashid Shaheed, who is a rookie in 2022, immediately impressed with 488 receiving yards and three overall touchdowns. In 2023, he added 719 receiving yards and five TDs to his previous 700 plus return yards.
Despite having his last season shortened by injuries, Rashid Shaheed has demonstrated that at full strength, he is one of the most dangerous weapons of the Saints. The dynamite act against the Giants is the most recent example that he can transform a game in a flash because of his speed.
