Marcel Reed will not forget his Saturday night performance; he threw two touchdowns and ran two others as No. 3 Texas A&M made a comeback to overcome No. 20 LSU 49-25 in Baton Rouge. The victory made the Aggies remain undefeated (they were at 8-0) and broke the six game losing streak at the Tiger Stadium, where it was their first victory since 1994.
Aggies could not have overcome their rivals without the dual-threat brilliance of Marcel Reed who led the Aggies to victory despite being 18-14 at halftime. Freshman quarterback threw 202 yards, with 108 on the ground, the first instance since Kellen Mond in 2017 when an A&M quarterback had passed over 200 yards and 108 yards in a game. He was also the first Aggie since Johnny Manziel in 2012 to have several passing and rushing TDs in an SEC game.
We are going to celebrate historic things that we have done, obviously, said Marcel Reed. “We’re happy about it for sure. But there is much work to be done yet.
The offense of Texas A&M began slowly, as they were wounded by their own turnovers that were converted into points by LSU. Marcel Reed also gave two interceptions in the first half of the game with one of them being in the red zone that would have seen the Aggies lead. To add to this, LSU took advantage with a Harlem Berry touchdown and a Damian Ramos field goal to turn to an 18-14 lead at the half-time.
However, following the halftime plea of coach Mike Elko, who told the Aggies: You are the better team, the Aggies prevailed. In the third quarter, Marcel Reed scored with 5 yards of a TD to retake the lead. Then, a few minutes later, KC Concepcion fell through the crowd with a 79-yard return of the punt, which equalled the number of scores in a season made by Christian Kirk by a single score on a punt.
You are that guy, you are that guy, I said to him, Marcel Reed. I do not know anybody that explosive in punch back game on my side. It’s fun to watch.”
Since then the Aggies never looked back. Rushing back Jamarion Morrow also scored a receiving and rushing TD and tight end Nate Boerkircher scored a 1-yard plunge early in the fourth quarter to make the game out of hand. The explosion in the second half stunned the crowd in the Tiger Stadium which was previously roaring.
On the defensive side of the case, the front of A&M made life miserable to the LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who was sacked five times before being pulled in the fourth quarter. LSU coach Brian Kelly said we were fighting in protection. It would have been unjust to leave him out of there.
The win is the best the A&M team has ever had since 1992 and the first road victory they have over LSU in over thirty years. It is also a continuation to their streak of breaking old streaks – and they did it previously both at Notre Dame and Arkansas this year.
Elko gave credit to the concentration and strength coach of his team Tommy Moffitt who had been with LSU and joined the postgame party of A&M. The one you are witnessing right now is the climax of a band of children knowing exactly what it takes to be successful and then go fight to achieve it, Elko said.
To Marcel Reed, it was not just the statistics but time to show their pride, togetherness, and a chance to show the world that the Aggies are one of the best among them. I love to play under the conditions of hostility, said he. I would not want to hear anything but ourselves celebrating at the end of the game.
Having their confidence at an all-time high and their hopes of a playoff intact, Texas A&M is now shifting its attention to completing what can be considered a historic season in College Station.
