Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Bucaneers could be soon seeking assistance along the edge and one name has already been mentioned: New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
In the case of the Lions, even going into the 2025 season, there will be a paucity of depth. They were hoping that Marcus Davenport would be on the opposite side of star Aidan Hutchinson, but Davenport had too many injuries to do that. He is put on the sidelines once again with a chest injury and the team even consulted a second opinion. In most cases that is an omen that he will be away some time and Detroit will be left in a difficult position.
The Bucs are not as bad as that but their pass rush is also yet to get going. Haason Reddick and Yaya Diaby are a good pair on paper, yet the pair has yet to deliver on their combination. Bringing some more depth would benefit the defense of Tampa Bay.
This is where Kayvon Thibodeaux fits in. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report proposed the two as potential trade destinations of the former number five pick of the Giants. He thinks that it would cost a second-round pick in 2026 to snatch him, but not even a third-rounder would be impossible to get the job.
Kayvon Thibodeaux has been fighting with some availability problems in his three plus seasons but on the field he is a difference-maker- tallying up 22.5 sacks in 45 games. He also has his fifth year option where he has a contract of five years until 2026, and hence, this makes him an appealing target to be traded before he can join a contract year.
Nevertheless, it is hard to imagine that New York will actually fire the trigger. The Giants have just picked up Abdul Carter, yet the head coach, Brian Daboll and GM, Joe Schoen are on the pressure to win now. They should not sell one of their best defenders and increase their workload.
