The New York giants hit the headlines this week when it freed up its cap space amounting to 4.8 million dollars a move that is getting people to speculate about a possible blockbuster deal involving a wide receiver.

NFL insider Field Yates reported that the Giants redesigned the contracts of cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland, which put an additional space within the salary cap of 2025. It was a move that was made, just before Week 7, which led to instant speculation that the team might be setting up a tough push to acquire a top-tier pass catcher.

According to SNY, Connor Hughes, New York is aggressive in seeking an addition of a receiver prior to the deadline of the trade and team sources stated that the front office is big game hunting. Hughes later clarified that several insiders told him that the team wanted to acquire more weapons to be used by rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, particularly in the absence of Malik Nabers (knee, out of season) and Darius Slayton (hamstring).

The arrival of a pool of talent to the role would be the best way to maximize the growth of Dart, Hughes wrote. Joe Schoen; the general manager, is attempting to do so.

There are Three Big Names on the Radar of the Giants

Hughes listed Chris Olave (Saints), Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins), and Jakobi Meyers (Raiders) as the best possible targets. All the three are established wideouts who can fill the role of WR1.

But any of them will not be easy to land. Hughes observed that pushing Waddle or Olave away would probably mean having to part with a significant amount of draft capital or shaking the front-office up in their respective teams. Waddle still has a contract with Miami that goes to 2028, and Olave a contract with New Orleans that runs to 2026.

Meyers, in its turn, might be the most realistic choice. According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, Raiders are willing to hear trade offers but are not actively trading him. Meyers allegedly asked to trade prior to the start of the season, but the team turned it down first.

The reasons behind why the Giants Cleared Cap Space

The restructurings of contracts were perceived as an intelligent financial measure without a trade. According to ESPN, Jordan Raanan, Giants were a mere 2.5 million below the salary cap prior to the changes.

Raanan said on X (formerly Twitter), some restructuring would have been required to make it through the season minus any major trades. He further indicated that the deals that Adebo and Holland were involved in were relatively easy targets as both are likely to stick around at the club.

The two defensive backs have played significant roles in the secondary of New York this season and are therefore sure bets in future investment.

New cap space and a rookie quarterback that requires reliable targets make the Giants seem prepared to step out there and it is likely that the upcoming few weeks will dictate the extent to which they are willing to go.
