With the Buffaloes losing 52-17 to Arizona in Boulder on Saturday night, the poor season Colorado was going through struck another blow, and head coach Deion Sanders did not allow his players to meet with the media. Rather, Sanders made himself the outright blame.
It is on me, no one will be available this evening, it is on me, Deion Sanders informed reporters at the very beginning of his postgame press conference. Shall I not smite the coordinators, attack me. Don’t attack the players. Come at me. This is me. This does not have anything to do with none of them. Everything has to do with me.
It was the second consecutive blowout loss the Colorado team had suffered since the previous week when they were humiliated 53-7 at Utah. Similar to that game, the Buffaloes lagged behind at the start and never came back – at one point falling 38-7 at halftime. Errors were accumulating, as Colorado had five turnovers and 14 penalties on Wildcats.
When inquired as to how things had gone wrong once again, Deion Sanders did not cushion his answer. “I have no idea. Knowing, I would not have permitted it to occur, said he. “It’s on me. Straight up. On me.”
Although there has been a back to back loss, Deion Sanders maintained that his team did not give up. I can tell when I see a quitter he said. “Hadn’t seen that.” The Buffaloes have a 3-6 record and 1-5 record in the Big 12. They would have to secure the remaining three matches with West Virginia, Arizona State and Kansas State to have any hope of making it to a bowl game.
Deion Sanders stated that he had hardly taken a walk out of the football compound since the Utah loss, in the days preceding the Arizona game, to get answers. However, the performance on Saturday indicated that there is a lot to be done.
There was only one shining moment that happened late in the game when a freshman quarterback Julian Lewis ended up on the field when it was too late. The much hyped recruit has already played two games this season and could still redshirt should he play not more than two of the remaining three games.
Starter Kaidon Salter produced 49 yards on 11 of 15 with 1TD and an interception, and was replaced by the second player, Ryan Staub, who had 2 interceptions in the first part of the third quarter.
As questioned about whether Lewis was a redshirt or not, Deion Sanders continued to put the emphasis on developing the players. You know I am on the side of the kids, you see. I want to do whatever is the best thing to these young men in their careers.
It is evident that Sanders is carrying the weight as the Colorado season is fading away, but the question is how he will turn the situation around before it is too late.
