Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is again facing a lawsuit as 11 former investors in the financial firm Aspiration, which has since collapsed, have sued and accused him of MCA secretly delivering millions of dollars to Kawhi Leonard. The plaintiffs argue that Ballner exploited the company, which was renamed to Catona, to evade NBA pay limitations and pay illegal payments to Leonard to make sure he would re-sign with the Clippers.
The bombshell claims were leaked in the form of court filings that were supplied by the journalist, Pablo Torre, who initially broke the story in the first half of the year. The complaint was released by the 133-page, and it claims that Ballmer had invested over 50 million dollars in Aspiration and was central in a covert payment deal that was aimed at retaining Leonard in Los Angeles.
Litigation Accuses off-the-book Payments and Fraud
The investors purport that Steve Ballmer conspired and enabled the Aspiration co-founder Joe Sanberg to commit fraud on his behalf at the company to launder money to Leonard. The suit claims that the owner of Clippers deceitfully told investors that he was involved, and that his funding enabled Aspiration to keep the lights on without revealing that it was engaging in so-called bad conduct.
The lawsuit claims that this was in the interest of Ballmer to obtain additional money to Leonard so he would avoid the salary rate, surpass the competition, and renew the superstar of his team. The plaintiffs indicate that they would not have ever invested in the firm had they been aware of the relationship of Ballmer to these secrets.
In a statement, attorney Skip Miller who represents the investors said: There are a lot of people who have been hurt in this. This case is being filed to recover their losses. We are eager to see our day in court where everything will be brought out in court and justice delivered.
Clippers and Steve Ballmer Deny the Misconduct
Steve Ballmer and the Clippers organization have vehemently opposed the claims declaring they were the same victims of the fraud. The team asserts that it was in a purely carbon offset and sustainability projects with Aspiration in the future Intuit Dome arena. The Clippers said in a statement that he unfortunately was swindled on the investment as were many other investors.
Nevertheless, new questions are still arising. Torre has reported that Ballmer used to send money to the organizations connected with Sanberg after the Clippers terminated their deal with Aspiration in 2023, which makes it unclear when he actually came to know about the supposed fraud.
In the meantime, NBA has initiated an enquiry regarding the issue. The league will be complete and impartial, commissioner Adam Silver said, and we will turn whatever we demand to bear on this case. I am a believer in fairness and due process.
The scandal is also untimely to the NBA, which has had two high profile gambling scandals of current and former players and coaches in the last few weeks.
Both Steve Ballmer and Kawhi Leonard remain unspeaking as yet, however; with this grand a lawsuit and an NBA investigation ongoing, the soap opera involving the Clippers front office will not be settled in the near future.
