Buddy Boeheim Signs with Oklahoma City Thunder Ahead of NBA Season

Buddy Boeheim signs with Oklahoma City Thunder

Buddy Boeheim is getting another shot at the NBA — this time with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The former Syracuse star and son of legendary coach Jim Boeheim has signed with the Thunder just a week before the regular season tips off. Oklahoma City announced the move on Tuesday as part of its 21-man training camp roster.

Buddy Boeheim, known for his sharp 3-point shooting, previously spent time with the Detroit Pistons, appearing in 20 NBA games over two seasons in limited minutes. Last year, he played for the Thunder’s G League affiliate, the Oklahoma City Blue, where he averaged 12.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 40 games. He attempted more than nine threes per game and connected on nearly 38% of them.

While Buddy Boeheim is expected to start the season again in the G League, his new deal — reportedly an Exhibit 10 contract — gives him a bonus incentive to remain within the Thunder organization. That could keep him in the mix for a potential NBA call-up later in the season.

The 6-foot-5 guard enjoyed a standout college career at Syracuse, where he became one of the ACC’s top shooters. Over four seasons with the Orange, Boeheim averaged 14.6 points per game and earned First-Team All-ACC honors as a senior, shooting 36.2% from beyond the arc.

To make room for Buddy Boeheim, the Thunder waived wing Payton Sandfort, who had spent only a day on the roster. Oklahoma City’s preseason roster now includes 15 players on guaranteed contracts, four on Exhibit 10 deals, and two on two-way contracts.

Boeheim’s future with the Thunder might not begin on the NBA court, but his continued growth in the G League could give him another chance to prove he belongs at the next level.
